Wibu-Systems® USA Announces a $40,000 “Hackers Contest”
The first person to successfully remove the copy protection from an application protected by Wibu-Systems’s new CodeMeter® protection system will win the whole $40,000.
SEATTLE, WA — (January 8, 2007) — Wibu-Systems USA, Inc, a leading provider of information security solutions for software protection, license management and user authentication, announced today a challenge to the worldwide “hacker” community. A prize of $40,000 (Forty Thousand Dollars) will be awarded to the first contestant to provide proof they were able to successfully remove the company’s new CodeMeter® system from a protected application that will be provided to all registered contestants.
“For years hackers have boasted they can pirate any software program copy-protected with a dongle” said Marcellus Buchheit, President, CEO and co-founder of Wibu-Systems. “Well, here’s a chance for them to earn high value bragging rights and take home $40,000, as icing on the cake… if they are as bright as they think they are.”
The contest will last approximately six weeks. It will begin at 6:00pm (Eastern Time) on January 31, 2007 and will end at exactly 5:59pm (EST) on March 14, 2007. The contest is open to any person who registers at the official registration site and agrees to the contest terms and conditions and pays a nominal registration fee.
Every Contestant is a Winner
Each registered contestant will receive a copy of the protected application and one CM-Stick/M (a USB hardware dongle containing a 256 MByte flash disk). This CM-Stick can also be used after the contest as a standard USB memory drive and as storage for product licenses, bought in the CodeMeter portal (http://www.codemeter.com). Also, each contestant can download from the same portal a personal “security suite” of applications containing a password management application, a file encryption application and an access control application – so each participant gets something of value (approximate value is $240), even if they don’t win the main prize.

Powerful Features – Simple Implementation for Software Developers
Whether the goal is to protect highly proprietary applications or to increase marketing channels, the CodeMeter system brings powerful encryption technologies to hardware based copy protection systems. Yet, the system is so simple to implement that a software developer can protect an application utilizing the new AxProtector tool in less than one hour.
The CodeMeter system will bring considerable savings in the form of reduced support line calls to software developers who implement the system. Consider the circumstance when the user purchases a new computer. The user can simply transfer the software license by plugging the CM-Stick into the new computer. No more hours with tech support, explaining that a new computer was purchased or a new hard drive was installed and the user should be entitled to another activation code.
The CodeMeter system works with Windows XP, Vista, Win32, Win64, Linux, UNIX, and Mac OS X.
Advantages for End-Users
An important advantage of the CodeMeter system for the end-user is the mobility of the software license. The license is no longer tied to a single computer. Rather it is bound to the CM-Stick. If the user wants to use the license at work in the daytime and at his PowerBook at home in the evenings; no problem — simply take the CM-Stick and plug it into the computer that will be worked on.
The user has the further benefit of using the CM-Stick as a personal “security suite,” bringing computer access control in the form of two-factor authentication, file or document encryption, portable password management and secure flash drive storage as additional built in features.
Availability
CodeMeter is now shipping worldwide and is priced according to the size of the onboard flash memory (A CM-Stick/M can contain up to 2 Gig of memory).
